Lorna McClelland was the Player Welfare and Liaison Officer at Aston Villa Football Club for 15 years, where she created the blueprint for player welfare in football. This followed her initial communication with Graham Taylor, during which she outlined her belief that there was an imperative need for this role in football. She was subsequently the first person to be solely appointed in this position. The structure was created to focus on the support of players and staff in an holistic and global sense.
Lorna promoted the model that players should be treated as a ‘family member’ when arriving at a club. After becoming established within the club, she encouraged players to become as independent as possible. She was, however, aware that not all players had the same facility for self-management or self-development, and so created individual support programmes. In addition, she promoted the concept of ‘family support’, recognising the importance and value of a happy and settled family life. She established a ‘buddy system’, so that players (often from similar backgrounds, with a common language and nationality) also supported each other. This recognition and understanding of the importance of culture and language has subsequently been adopted by the majority of clubs.
Lorna assisted players in settling into their new club by organising accommodation, cars, bank accounts, language tuition/translation and interpreting, and schools for their children. The needs varied from player to player, and the support provided was tailored to their needs. These structures have now become the norm within Premiership and Championship clubs, and also lower league clubs, where possible. It is widely recognised that good organisation and support of a player will enable him or her to settle quickly and be able to play to the best of their ability.
Lorna is an experienced counsellor, and believes that players benefit from the opportunity to seek confidential support when necessary. She is multi-lingual, having lived and worked abroad. She set up the ‘National Association of Player Welfare Officers’ in order to disseminate information to establish best practice in clubs. She is familiar with the issues faced by sportspeople, and has spoken on many occasions to groups of players, and students in a university setting.
Lorna is Senior Consultant at GCSportscare, and also works independently as a regular contributor to radio, television and the written media.
